Epic! at Derby QUAD: Seven Samurai
What do John Sturges’ classic 1960 Western The Magnificent Seven, Jimmy T. Murakami’s 1980 space adventure Battle Beyond The Stars and John Lasseter’s 1998 Pixar comedy A Bug’s Life have in common?
The answer, of course, is that all three are remakes of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic Seven Samurai – but of course that list doesn’t include all of the other movies inspired by Kurosawa’s masterpiece. It is, in essence, the foundation of modern action cinema and still an exhilarating experience, largely because the 207 minute running time allows room for social comment and loveable characters amidst the never-bettered mayhem of its combat sequences.
I’m delighted to say that this Sunday (19th October) I’ll be introducing Seven Samurai at Derby QUAD, as part of my regular Epic! strand of films you must see on the big screen.
See you there. Meanwhile, here’s my recent review of Seven Samurai for Total Film.
