Introducing John Ford’s The Searchers at Epic! @ Derby QUAD

March 18, 2013 by Simon Kinnear in Introductions, Opinion with 1 Comment

Sunday, 24th March at 4pm – that’ll be the day…

…that Kinnemaniac takes the stage to introduce John Ford’s classic Western The Searchers, starring John Wayne in his signature role as anti-hero Ethan Edwards.

This is the second screening in Derby QUAD’s Epic! strand, putting essential big-screen movies back where they belong.  With its quest narrative and Monument Valley backdrops, The Searchers fits the bill perfectly, especially given its status as one of the best films ever made.

While a modest hit on release in 1956, The Searchers has come to be recognised as the greatest of Hollywood Westerns, a mainstay in all time critics’ lists (most recently appearing at #6 in the 2012 Sight & Sound poll) and an enduring source of inspiration to filmmakers, with Taxi Driver and Star Wars amongst the greats which borrow from Ford.

And yet, according to a new book by Glenn Frankel, The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend, Ford’s film is “perhaps the greatest Hollywood film that few people have seen.”

Visit Derby QUAD on Sunday to find out what all the fuss is about by seeing The Searchers on the big screen.

Previously on Epic! Lawrence Of Arabia.
