Steve McQueen’s Shame sets early benchmark for the best film of 2012

January 10, 2012 by Simon Kinnear in In Cinemas with 0 Comments

Sex, sex and more sex. That’s pretty much the plot of Steve McQueen’s Shame, in cinemas this Friday, but it’s also a brave and astute portait of a man’s descent into an all-consuming sex addiction, brilliantly played by Michael Fassbender. The Americans might have saddled Shame with an idiotic (if expected) NC-17 certificate, but it’s certainly not a porn flick… or, rather, it’s a porn flick beamed in from a parallel dimension where instead of cum shots, McQueen brings us mesmerising long takes of Fassbender jogging across Manhattan, or Carey Mulligan singing New York, New York.  Cum shots for film geeks, if you like.

Anyway, a superb film, and the perfect alternative if you don’t fancy Steven Spielberg’s My Lovely Horse. I saw Shame at the London Film Festival, so you’ll have to click here for my full Shame review.
